When my Gram wanted to get rid of something she'd say she was giving it "the Highland fling". I have no idea what that means!

My mom always told us "the first thing you want is the last thing you'll get", we never asked for anything when out shopping. When my boys were 12 & 6 my parents took them on a trip along Oregon coast and as they were getting in the car she told them the same thing.

My mom would say, "Better to keep one's mouth closed and be thought a fool than to open it and remove all doubt."

I'm guessing that this is a play on words. The Highland Fling is a dance, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=emCIxAJCe2g so this was put into a phrase when some thing needed 'flinging' (throwing) out.

Can you walk a mile in what you are wearing? A phrase I have used often.

From my Irish grandfather "If you were born to hang, you'll never be shot."
