I bought a new jacket last year and before the jacket was 6 mos old the zipper went in it...the plastic part that fits into the zipper at the bottom just disintegrated...is there some simple solution to fix this zipper or am I going to have to bite the bullet and put in a new one...what really gets me is that the jacket wasnt cheap and I really like it...hoping someone has a quick fix for this one.

I'm thinking the zipper needs to be replaced. I'm not a seamstress, so I'm interested in other people's comments.

If it helps you any, I am replacing the zipper in my favorite sweatshirt jacket right now. :D

You might check with your local dry cleaner. They usually have parts to fix zippers if they do any kind of repair work at all and most dry cleaners do repairs and alterations.

Hi Maggie, I found this website that had some different fixes for zipper repairs....I hope one of them can help you.

You're going to have to bite the bullet and replace the zipper. If it was just the zipper pull, I believe that you can buy those separately.

That's exactly what I would do....I couldn't sew a zipper in/on if my life depended on it.

I did a simple replace on a child's jacket once. I simply sewed a new zipper on top of the old zipper, then cut the old zipper off. There was just enough space to do this. Might not work on your jacket as it might show too much as a repair; on the child's jacket it really didn't matter.

I really like the dry cleaner idea......

ummm.....yes, probably have to replace that zipper. Plastic parts are a real bummer...once broken, can't be fixed usually.

I've replaced them in sweatshirt jackets by cutting off the teeth part and just sewing in a new zipper. Not sure how the jacket is made and if it's a good jacket you probably wouldn't want to do that.

As a seamstress, I can tell you that the zipper will have to be replaced. Customers do not understand the amount of time it takes just to get old zipper out before new one can be sewn back in. There are usually 6 rows of stitching to be taken out first. It is NOT one of my favorite jobs.
