Someone asked what is needed at the animal shelter
Someone asked earlier for me to post what is needed at the animal shelter. I volunteer daily there and do the laundry, so I feel comfortable posting what I have learned in the last few months.
The shelter uses an incredible amount of washclothes to clean and disinfect the crates. Towels are also in great demand...they are washed daily with bleach and detergent.
They still love the waterproof pads but also use a lot of acrylic throws. The acrylic (or fleece) washes well and dries very well. They sometimes cut the throws up into smaller pieces for the kittens (it is kitten season right now).
Some pet beds are used, but minimal compared to the above items.
As an aside, I ended up adopting a kitten. He was in the incoming room across from the laundry area. I noticed he started retreating to the back of the cage and took him in with me to the laundry area. He was not showing any symptom of upper respiratory problems. However, when they moved him out of the incoming area, he developed a sneeze, and I adopted him to get him out of there.
He has been to the vet and is on an antibiotic. I am keeping him isolated from my other two grown cats, but I do take him out to socialize with him as much as I can.
When I get a decent picture, I will add to this thread so you all can meet him.

Do you know if they take used towels and washcloths? I have lots that have wear on them and use some for my animals and cleaning but have extra. I don't want to insult them by taking used if they don't want them...

I'm sure they do. Our vet used to ask for donations of old towels and wash cloths.
