Yes, you can use the sudsy amonia and you do it once in the spring and once in the fall. You can give it to your house plants, too. I know what you mean about the newspaper :oops: I was holding it down while DH was putting on the mulch, then it stayed put ;-) After your garden is done and you till that all in, it really helps the soil. We do it every year.
