In 1951-52 my school uniform required stockings. My Mom went to Grants in Hempstead, LI, and bought me heavy rayon hose. I was mortified . They wore like iron. UGH

I'm from that era, too. Rolled the brown stockings up and down, but I got caught. Had class picture taken one day and there I sit in the front row with the donuts around my ankles!

The old ladies (my Grandma and her friends age group - probably born around 1900) would sort of knot their stockings right below their knees. (My memories from around 1945-1950)

Some of the heftier ladies did not seem to be overly conscious about how they sat.

Did any of you wear a girdle instead of a garter belt to hold your nylons up?

I remember the long cotton stockings and we had fasteners on our underwear that held them up. I hated them, and as soon as I got down over the hill, out of site of the house I would roll the stockings down. Oh those were the days. haha

My first school pic was a group --2 room 's. I was not smiling and to this day I think it was because of those flesh colored long stockings. Had the rubber jar rings to use as an elastis to hold them up. Still hate pantyhose too.
Wear slacks instead.

I remember in first and second grade wearing flesh colored long cotton knit stockings - I think we had some sort of kiddie garter belt to hold them up - I don't remember how they stayed up - they were thigh high.

I do remember nylons - and how hard it was to get the seam straight. And with those we had a garter belt. It was always a debate about whether to wear it over or under the underpants. I think "under" was the usual choice.

My DH kind of misses those days!

I miss the body I had then.

I can still get into a pair of pantyhose - but, man, it's a struggle. One leg always twists and it's about four tries to get that right!

I am still traumatized by seeing my 70 yr old grandma in panty hose that she was going to wear "under" her panties! I didn't even know you could do such a thing! I shudder at the thought even now.

Gosh, what a trip down memory lane. I remember garter belts poping open , at recess, snapping you in the butt, the cold drafts that blew up your skirt, when we balked at putting on ski pants and wondering why we couldn't appear slightly unlady like for a few month out of the year. Girls today wear cut up jean with more holes than fabric in them and they call that fashion. When we were growing up those kids received donations of presentable hand me downs because they were hit by hard times. Now they pay more money for these jeans than we do for regular jeans...What a trip down rural Americana life that by todays standards wasn't so bad after all... :-D
