Try keeping your duck in a plastic box and use old towels to line it with. Change them out a couple times a day and wash them with bleach. I keep a stash of old ones cut up with the edges serged to prevent strings ready to go. This helps with smell and other things. We have hand raised emu chicks this way in the house for a couple months without any nasty smells. They are way bigger than a duck which means their poop is bigger too! Be very sure the poor thing is getting enough water. Dehydration is critical. Some chicks really aren't good at drinking on their own, especially sick. We used a syringe (without needle!) and watered our chicks several times a day. They may not open their beak for you so you might need to "help" the chick. When in doubt call a wildlife rescuer. They are usually more than happy to advise.

We had 2 baby ducks we raised in a childs plastic wading pool. I put an old towel in and a plate of water. Then as they grew I switched the plate to a pie pan. Eventually, after they started hopping out of the pool, I fenced in an area outside and sank the pool into the ground. Oops, ducklings could fall in but not get out so we added some bricks for stepping up on. Finally, ducks got big enough to fly over the fence and they would follow me around quacking quietly and scooping up slugs. They LOVED the sprinklers! Poop wasn't too much of a problem as they spread it around the yard. LOL

Uglycook, that is good information to know. I was only thinking of raising a sick bird inside that wasn't able to get around much. A duck is very different from an emu I'm afraid. Emus are really very primative in comparison and a whole lot taller. Our chicks grew from 12 inches to 36 inches tall in about 6 weeks. Lets just say, they never had much trouble getting out of a small pool after a couple weeks and they never swim so I never thought about that part much. I love learning new stuff.

Lmao, an emu would be big!! But I'm sure we could fix.a home for it. Lol.

We used to have 12 tame ducks but they picked on the turkeys too much so we gave them to a friend that already had ducks.

We'll, I am sad to say the little guy didn't make it. We didn't think he would, but if you don't try, you don't know. Thank you everyone for caring

The kid took it very well. She is so grown up. :)
