I have an older machine that does not allow for the large spools. I simply take a very large safety pin and tape it to the side of my machine, with the curly end sticking up as high as I can get it. Then I set the large cone below it, and thread it through the eye of the safety pin, then into the machine. It works great.

I had thread that I wanted to use and the cone wouldn't stay put, in other words it wasn't working. So I wound a bobbin with the thread and used it from the spool position. It worked great and I've done this a number of times without any problems. Good luck
