I have also used one for many years...it keeps food safe for a lot longer in your freezer. I had a FoodSaver brand but just purchased a newer one from Freiling.

I have had FS machines for a very long time. I now only buy pre-made bags to save the sealing part of the machine. I also save used bags--NOT used for fresh meats--to be liners in larger bags. Put items in used smaller bag, put in new bag and seal, toss small bag or reuse, use for sharp edged items.
I also use those plain food storage bags to put items in before putting in FS bags. The machines are great for any/every day use.
I get my bags in bulk from https://foodvacbags.com/

I have owned a foodsaver brand model for about 4 years now. I was very excited when I bought it. We were boping to freeze garden produce and leftovers, among other things. Right after I bought it, we went to the farmer's market and bought abought 5 dozen ears of corn, hoping to freeze it. We cut the kernels off the cobs and tried to use the food saver to package it. It was then that we realized that the moisture from the food prevented the bags from sealing. This is the downside. I'm surprised that nobody has mentioned it. If anyone knows a method to vacuum seal foods with liquids, I'd love to hear it. I had high hopes for this gizmo. Also, like many of you, I use Mason jars to store things.

I recently bought a Food Saver and for liquids I put them in a regular zip lock bag then place it inside vacuum seal bag. Also my machine has a setting for dry or moist setting.

Thank you for that tip. I will try it. Mine has the moist/dry setting as well, but it doesn't seem to matter.

You're welcome SewingSew, I just vacuumed 3 bags of white beans & ham. After pouring them into a zip lock bag I squeezed all the air out and then placed the "zipped end" in the already sealed end of the vac bag before sealing

In situations like this, I would freeze the item in ziplocks or on a sheet pan. After they are frozen, then I would put them into the vacuum bags and seal.

There is a moist setting on some Foodsavers but you might want to wipe off the inside of the bag where it will bond then when you run it let the bag sag down a bit so it would have to really work to get the liquids out. I sealed home made tomato soup that way.
