Hello Everyone
We are starting to think of a holiday to Washington next year but, as a quilter, it seems only sensible to combine this with seeing one of your huge quilt shows somewhere. Having no idea about the geography, can someone make some suggestions?
I have a life long ambition to travel on a Greyhound bus so Washington to somewhere realistically accessible by bus is the answer.
The sun is shining in Kent (the garden of England) and I hope it's shining on you too.

What are your interests? Yellowstone Nat. Park is remote but there's no where else like it. Caves in Tenn. and other states. Rodeos in lots of states. Chicago museums. When I traveled with hubby, I hit every fabric store. That was the most fun. Can't help you much with big cities - I avoid them.

Lancaster Pennsylvania is about 2 and 1/2 hours from Washington DC. There is an American Quilters Society show scheduled there for 2012: March 14 - 17. This is an ideal location because it will give you an opportunity to see Amish Country and enjoy many, many, many quilt shops to see Amish quilts and quality fabric at great prices. You would have to check with greyhound about the bus, but I'm sure there is a bus station there as it is a major location in the area. Oops, hope you meant Washington DC!

I live 30 minutes from Washington DC and going to Lancaster Pennsylvannia to see the quilts, fabric stores and the Amish would be a great visit. I know you want to go to Washington but if you are ever in Houston Texas, the International Quilt Festival (www.quilts.com) is a must see. There are thousands of quilts and about 1500 vendors.

Back in the late '60's I traveled all over the US by Greyhound bus. It was great.
You might try googleing US quilt shows to see if there is one near where you will be at the time you are here. Also check to see about quilting museums. Then check to see how long it takes to get from point A to point B. The Greyhound bus sight tells the # of hours involved in the trip. Then you would know if you needed to get a hotel room for a night once you arrive.
Washington DC has so many museums it would take weeks to see them all. The Smithsonian has several in the DC area.

I think you might find a different kind of people travelling the Hound these days!! It might be interesting!! How about renting a car instead, might be cheaper. If you can get over that wrong side of the road driving, I know I wouldn't try it in England!!

How about WIlliamsburg, Va, I think that is somewhat near to Washington DC.
