Can you imagine going to a slum in Kibera, Kenya and starting a school for girls? That's what Wesleyan grad Jessica Posner did.
A bunch of DD's Wes friends are in Kenya now, making a difference.
Jess is a finalist for a $100,000 grant on VH1 tonight. It's one of those audience votes things. So please take the time & vote.
Read about the school and a new clinic on the Shining Hope website.
When I was 25 I could barely take care of myself!! Thank you!

Is there a certain time to look for the vote? I would very much like to participate. Been Wesleyan since it joined up with the Pilgrim Holiness in the late 50's
I have a cousin in Uganda just now, doing similar work. More soldiers than military soldiers in our beautiful world!
Blessings,
Ruth

My daughter says go to the website. Today is the last day of voting. The clinic they are building is to honor Johanna, a coed gunned down on campus last year. You might remember the horrible news stories, from Middletown Ct. Here are kids turning tragedy into something good. Awesome!

I didn't have to register! I just voted and got a message that my vote was recorded. I read that you had to register if you wanted to leave a message or comment.
Anyway, Mark's votes were at 29% and Jessica's were at 71% ! Woo hoo!
Since I didn't have to register, does that mean I can vote more than once? C'mon, people, let's DO this!
I watched a PBS program over the weekend about how, years ago, a holocaust survivor, now in her late '80's and living in Sweden, sponsored a young man from Kenya to go to high school. He eventually graduated from Harvard, joined the UN and is now one of the organizers of a UN group that gives scholarships to deserving young people to go to high school who would otherwise not be able to afford to go. High school is not free! The children are recommended by their elementary school teachers, then they prepare for and take a competitive exam and vie for the 10 scholarships offered. (This was several years ago.) It was absolutely heartbreaking for those many children who did not make it. How disappointed they were, the tears streaking down their cheeks. They were very, very poor and every one of them wanted to go to school so they could get a good job and make money to help their families who were in dire need. This was really, really sad. To make matters worse, this was all happening in the midst of the horrible politics-based genocide that was taking place in Kenya.
I applaud Jessica for the enormous task she has undertaken and sincerely hope she gets this award.
What do you say we all help her out? Only takes a second to vote!
