Good to pass on. DH is a firefighter and is paranoid about disposal of ANY batteries. Makes me crazy to have a bazillion dead batteries laying around the house but it certainly beats the alternative.

Thank for the link. Reminded me that I have not changed my smoke detector battery.

Thanks for the site. We're like him, we have our old batteries in a bag, will be taping them all today. We've never even thought of the fire potential.

A similar but not as devastating incidence happened to my husband. He had two AAA batteries in his front pants pocket. They made contact and began to get hot. A lesson learned without damage. This is a very important message.

I never knew this about batteries. This man seems very grounded and yet see how he panicked when the fire started.

When I was a child my father would have us all talk about various scenarios about where we might be if a fire broke out and how would we get out of the house. Our main focus was to get out and then we had a spot where we would all meet. He did this once a year. I think it would be good practice for everyone, adults as well as children. Maybe then we could act properly/safely in a moment of panic.

I will be passing this on to all the people I know. Who would ever think that a couple of dead 9 volts batteries could cause such damage.
