me too....but mine's a small wooden mallet. I tried a black rubber one, and it left black marks on the fabric. didn't really matter on the back side but.....I found a cute wooden one that I can also use like a tailor's block.

You know those microwave bowl cozies? I made a bunch of them and confiscated one to sit beside my machine for threads and fabric snips and scraps.

I use something like this I got from a monthly subscription box from Fat Quarter Shop. It's collapsible and has an elastic loop to compress it when not in use. Great for taking to classes and retreats too! https://www.amazon.com/Gypsy-Quilter...06879800&psc=1

Since I am a lefty my wastebasket at my cutting table is on the left as well at my sewing machine.
