How interesting! We have a mattress from a furniture store that we laid on for a while (with people watching us) that we are very happy with. I think there is a little bit of extra padding on top. It is the kind that doesn't have to be turned. We did get the smaller box spring but it is still high. It is about 6 years old and we are both still happy with it. I have a friend with an older TemperPedic who swears by it. She likes to be very cold and says that her mattress doesn't make her hot. And her back pain disappeared. We have relatives with a Sleep Number bed. The wife likes it but the husband can't seem to get it adjusted to his liking. So I do think the advice given to go lie down on them and see. Sometimes extra firm is too hard and sometimes you just don't like the way it feels. Good luck!!

You should probably ask people in your area that have bought mattresses from the same stores that are available to you and see what they say. If you are going for just a regular interspring mattress, the "mattress factory" type stores are usually the most inexpensive and ours has help up fine for 8 yrs and we're both BIG people.

We liked the one at Costco, but didn't want to haul it home. Went to Sleep Country, and found their version, which is a Serta, priced the same, and they deliver and haul out the old mattress/box springs, too. Great mattress, but really, really thick, so it can't be turned over, just rotated side to side. We made sure we bought the mattress cover that protects against ALL stains (we have a very elderly yorkie who sleeps there, too). It was $100, but absolutely guaranteed to protect the mattress or they will buy the next one. If you have any stains on the mattress and it becomes a warranty issue, stains void the warranty. We also have an extra thick mattress pad on it, so it can be washed often. LOVE the mattress, its been on our bed around a year, and we're very happy with it.

The most important recommendation is to make sure that the mattress is by a good company that uses all NEW material. Sounds like an obvious thing but I just saw a report on mattresses that were refurbished being sold as new. YUCK!!! My son is due to buy a new mattress and said he will not buy the pillow top kind again. It was great for a while but you can't flip it if it developes a sag. I buy a good quality firm mattress and purchase the foam topper for it. I need the firm support for my back but my poor little boney joints need the foam padding.

we had a pillow top hated it saged after 1 1/2years and gave me lots off back pain. so we got a big chunk of foam and use that as a mattress insted cost 1/4 the price and way more comfortable

I have bought several sets from Original Mattress Factory and considered them a good deal for the money. Some back pains won't go away no matter which mattress you own. I do not like pillow top or memory foam..to hard to get turned over!!! You sink and you're stuck! The best mattress I ever slept on was an old latex foam one of my mom's. That thing was still comfy even after the foam started to turn to dust! My daughter bought a memory foam type on overstock. She loves it. My son bought a Sealy pillow top from Overstock, he likes it..seems cheap to me. I sleep on a 7 year old middle of the road original mattress factory non-pillow top, non plush. I think with bedding..you pay your money and take your chances!

We like the Sleep Number. Originally, we had a temporpedic (foam) and HATED it! Smelled so bad when we first got it, it took a month before the smell decreased. Just was not for us.
