I got a kick out of this post....my grandmother used to do a lot of the things I've seen here, she also used to say if you need to feed a crowd, serve tough meat. Supposedly if people had to chew and chew and chew before they could swallow, they wouldn't eat as much and the food would go farther. lol
Once she scolded me because there was a penny on the floor and I swept it into the dustpan. I got a lecture about if I went shopping and was a penny short I wouldn't get my stuff.
Mostly we all just laughed, rolled our eyes, and figured it was because she lived thru the great depression. But she did die very wealthy, so I guess she got the last laugh!

Some wonderful ideas here.
I keep a large plastic tub in the freezer in my refrigerator. After every meal if there is veggie/meat broth left in a dish or a tiny portion of meat or veggies left that isn't enough for another meal or to pack in my lunch it gets scooped into the tub. When it's full I thaw it check the ingredients and make veggie soup. Sometimes I have to add some onion or celery and a wee bit of seasoning. Usually it's fine as is. It's like getting a meal for f-r-e-e. Put anything in there that you would normally add to soup. Free meal, nothing goes bad in the back of the fridge.

I guess frugal is in the eye of the beholder. I dilute the Mary Ellens Best Press ... of course the truly frugal person would not even buy mary ellens! I try, but I am not that frugal.

I buy bed liners and old blankeys for batting.
I feel like if I spend too much on a quilt for someone, its more like I bought it and less like I made it. Shipping is the kicker. My 5 dollar project becomes a 20 dollar project! Lol
I feel obligated to the tradition of using what is available, so I'll probably never visit this joanne person you all speak so highly of.
