What does "thumbup" Mean?

Thumb up comes from the Roman times ,Slaves had to fight for the pleasure of Nero in the Coliseum. The emperor would put his thumb down if he wanted the loser pui io death . A thumb up would save his life. There is a scene in the movie Ben Hur that depicts my explanation. In French we have no word for it, but we do use the gesture when we don't agree on something.
