I live in a smaller community, there is always collections going on for the food bank. There are many places that collect clothing, school supplies, toiletries, etc... for those in need.
Groups who sew quilts for the hospital, nursing homes, and other organizations.
During the holidays, all of these programs really gear up to take care of the families in need.
There are many other ways that the community pulls together to help, too. We live in a flood plain, so usually once a year there are other needs and everyong bans together to help with items as well as labor :D:D:D

You could get a whole laundry list of degrees besides an associates that would get you a job, like auto mechanic or medical assistant.

There were about 1500 students eligible. Many had over means to go to college, several started and dropped out.

So far 253 students have gone through the program and will complete it this spring. Thats over 25 THOUSAND hours of volunteer time that will be donated into our community in addition to 253 kids that get a jump on life.

Isn't this a perfect example of 20% of the people doing 80% of the work. Thrilling to hear of those who are smart enough to follow thru, very disheartening about those who couldn't be bothered. Maybe we will begin to change our "free" lagging public school systems when we begin "requiring" give-back public service, no options. Most private schools operate this way.
