Mushroom hunting is a major spring time activity here. If you are a good hunter, you can make good money selling them in season.

I've not seen one like in the picture. The people commenting on it seem to live farther north than I do so maybe they don't grow here. Thanks for sharing the picture with us.

I am not confidant enough in myself (or anyone else LOL) to eat a mushroom that isn't store bought! My father's people used to gather wild mushrooms, and they told me that EVERY single edible mushroom has a poisonous look alike, except 1 variety, (of course I can't remember what that one is right now)...but admire from afar and go to the store!

My sentiments exactly! I shuddered when my BIL took up mushroom hunting. Thankfully, I think it was a passing phase.

Well I don't eat mushrooms, just have never liked them. I agree with the other's "Buy" them. Also I just saw an article about people going mushroom picking & they had taken their dog who enjoyed eating them, he died. So you might want to tell your neighbor to watch what his sweet doggy eats. To scarey.

I was gonna post, if a dog eats it it must be safe..............however dogs eats things I wouldn't even want to smell, so that being said and TnBecky posting about the dog that died from eating mushrooms, when hubby wants them I buy them at the store where I can pick them from a big bag of loose ones or the cartons that say 'mushrooms' on the wrapping.

One thing, I'm allergic to them, so if someone posts I died from mushrooms you know to call for an 'investigation'.

I don't know one from another, but if I was thinking of eating one, I would want the opinion of an expert who lives where it grows. We have similar things that pop up in our yard after a rain, but we're a couple thousand miles from you, and I wouldn't venture to guess that one of ours is anything like one in NY. Maybe they are, but if someone's health and safety is at stake, you'd better be sure you know what you're doing. There is very likely a mushroom group in your area, and you could possibly find them online. Try Google, "mushrooms" and the name of your region or county. The county agricultural extension service might also be a resource.

Grandpa told me to always look at the gills. " If its white, its alright, if its brown, toss it down" The only ones I am very familiar with are Morels, and we don't get many here unless there has been a fire
