It looks some what like a "shaggy mane" mushroom, but I'm not an expert so I wouldn't eat it.

That's a "shaggy mane". They're very good, lightly sautéed, with a delicate flavor and fragile caps. Just wash them; no need to "peel". Note: you MUST use them quickly after collecting as they begin to deteriorate & discolor within an hour, hence their nickname "inky caps".

We call them 'ink caps' very tasty, but as postal packing mama said use them as soon as they are picked or you will end up with a slushy mush they are very tasty

Wow reminds me when I lived upstate ny and loved picking wild mushrooms. Most important thing I learnned consult my wild mushroom book and then ask an expert to get a second opinion. Experts from Europe were in the area. At first I made many mistakes and after a number of years I got better at it. There is A LOT to it undertones of color for example are something to look at. Mistakes could be deadly, so just consult someone who has been picking mushrooms many years, it takes time to get good at it.

I buy my mushrooms at the grocery store. It is just not worth the risk. There have been accidental poisonings from people who thought they knew what they were picking.

I have a sure-fire way of telling which mushrooms are safe to eat -------------- look for the word "MUSHROOMS" on the side of the package in the supermarket!!

Seriously, even experts on wild mushrooms, people who write books on the subject --- the majority of them die from - you guessed it - mushroom poisoning.

A while back I heard of several people in California having to have liver transplants from eating wrong kind of mushrooms. I buy mine at the store.
