I love the warm wishes pattern! You've got the rail fence alternated with a big square (to show of some pretty fabric). New quilters often get hooked by that 'pretty fabric'!
I would definitely stick to squares and rectangles for the first few projects. There are so many lovely quilts with just that! I wouldn't introduce triangles until the new quilter has a finished project under her belt and is itching for more!

When I first learned how to quilt, I was in a small class of 6 or 8 people. All of us made a rag quilt as our first. I don't see how anything could be any easier. I was such a newbie that my first challenge was mastering the rotary cutter. Just having one block to learn enabled me to master that skill, so that I was able to start on my next quilt with confidence that I could cut the varying pieces correctly. That first quilt is the one that appears in my avatar. 😊
