The first thing my daughter made (7) was a doll quilt, she has made a few, and now wants to make a purse or tote bage. My eldest (12) first project was a baby blanket. I think starting something small is best, they need to have that sense of accomplishment, best way to do that is to have something small that can get done quickly. Pillowcases as already mentioned are fast and easy.

My 6 year old granddaughter made this one on a battery operated machine while we were camping. Just 5 inch charm squares

Donna,
It looks like a really fun project. It doesn't look to have binding. Did you just make it like a pillow case and turn it? She looks like she's pretty proud of it and obviously had fun doing it. Thanks for the idea

It is pillow cased and her dad taught her to tie she she did it herself with a little guidance from dad. My favorite Picture!

Donna
Did you put batting inside. If so was it sewn in the seam or do you work it in after turning and then tie it?
By the way we didn't have an iron that is why it is so puffy and not flat!! LOL

She sewed it in the seam as normal it wasn't easy on that little machine but she did it with lots of determination!

The beginner girls at school are making 9 inch drawstring bags. I can send you the directions if you like.

Pillowcases with interesting pieced borders. She can then make these for her BFFs for gifts. 10 year olds *might* be past the doll stage these days, sadly.

Jan, That's another great idea. She'd love making things for her friends.
