So! How did the cattle get out?
And, how did you get your pup to follow?
I have a blue heeler. I made the mistake of allowing him to charge a steer who kept challenging my fenceline, so now he is stuck on fast forward ...
Although, I will say that all I have to say is "down", and he backs off immediately. He is also pretty good at heading and heeling, when we are using him to move cattle and one gets a bit high handed.
He doesn't go out and herd the cattle when he is out alone, but he takes great delight in swinging from their tails if he gets to hustle them up a bit.
He doesn't try it ever time, but if he doesn't get to work cattle at least twice a week, he will start making his own decisions about when his help is needed.
Obviously <g> my dog knows more about what he is supposed to be doing than I do.

When my DD was 3 she took a ride with a boy (4) in one of those things. THey were headed down the drive way and she reached around and put her arm on his shoulder. Shook him up so much he ran it off in a ditch. We all stood there and laughed until we peed.

She is so cute. And looks like she is having a ball. Glad the cow and steer are home.

They got out where a branch had fallen on the fence and we didnt find it until the cow got out!!!! DH has been working with the dog on working with cattle and the goats. But I think it was probably just pure luck!!!!

A branch ... sneaky little devil <g>.
We were out feeding this evening, and I looked up in time to see a red, white face head around the foundation ... oops, I told hubby ... the calf is out and I had best get up there and start getting things under control.
Hubby was re-charging the rub, so I left him with the Cadet and the dogs took off with me across the pasture ...
my surprise was: it wasn't the calf ... but, it was the mom, so now mom is on the wrong side of the electric fence and the calf is on the right side, but calf can get to the wrong side to be with mom, so! The problem is: how to get mom up the hill if the calf ever comes through. (Normal people would probably be asking - - why did that cow go through the electric fence, but I pulled my Scarlett O'Hara character out and said, "I will think about that LATER!")
My cattle come (usually when I call "Come, Babe" ... but, they are usually in a slightly different frame of mind.
I managed to get her to follow me and the dogs (who won't "stay" worth beans at the most inopportune times) up the hill until we got to the machine shed - - which is not actually a shed, but is a lot of machinery all parked together. Then the calf came out, and I was sure I was going to lose it all ... but hubby came up with the Cadet ... he got behind her, and the short of it all was: cow and calf back with the herd and NO equipment damage ... how is that for being accomplished???
and, we found out that cattle will too go up a steep hill ... and some other things about the design of our fences when cattle are walking up sand hills next to electric fences. <g>
Just another day in paradise! LOL
I think your pup is a lot of what your husband has put into him.
Did he ever work him with a leash?
We didn't get Duke until he was over a year and a half old ... the fact that he is as good as he is, is almost a miracle.

Sounds like you had a FUN day omak!!! :D these critters can be quite frustrating sometimes!!!!
This pup and our donkey have become best buds! It is so funny to watch them, they have "tender moments" together!!!!!

No DH hasnt put the pup on a leash yet. I have a feeling he wont like it much! These heelers have an inborn instinct about working with cattle, so pups arent to hard to train. I would imagine if yours hasnt been around cattle before you got him, it might take a little longer.
