The last line under System tells you what service pack that you are running. If no service pack is listed, you are running the release version of Windows XP.
There are different settings in XP for each service packs.

If you are running the Windows XP Service Pack 1, the product is out of life cycle. Therefore, there is no updating for it. You need to update to service pack 2 or 3. It's free.
Here is picture guide to get to the firewall in XP running Service Pack 1.

If all that doesn't work, here are things my kids always ask:
"Mom, did you check the settings on the antivirus security program" (you know like Norton, or in our case Advantquest)? I always forget I can look for the little icon on the lower right of the toolbar.
I say "NO, do I look like I thought of that?" The kids roll their eyes and act like they think I'm dumber than the cat.
"Mom, did you check to see if the pop-up blocker was disabled?"

My cat just sits by the computer, on the keyboard to block the screen, and looks smug. My cat knows who's boss and it definitely isn't me because SHE controls the technology.
Moral of this story, keep the cat, they eat less than the kids.

No, I'm not a real computer know how person, I do what the computer techs do, I Google it. If there is a solution, someone has posted it somewhere. I have not had one computer problem that Google hasn't found an answer to.
