The (then) president of a company I was temping at asked me "Who is your superior?"

Doggone near choked on that one - my immediate thought was "I haven't been here long enough to know who might be - - -"
:hunf:

but I replied, "I report to . . . . "

It depends!  That's why English is so hard. Too many rules that have exceptions.

Periods and commas always go inside the quotation marks. The rules for other punctuation are not so simple.

This is only one of the many places you can get this information. Google "punctuation rules" and you get a long list of options.
That just went into my favorite places. Thousands of times I try to remember back in high school (over 40 years ago) what a rule is. Thanks for sharing.

My favorite is quoting a quote:

Mary said, "'Never empty handed to the kitchen go.'"

I can't stand people bungling its and it's - "it's" very easy - it's = it is. Period. End of discussion. If you wouldn't put "it is" in the sentence , don't put in "it's".

Remember punctuation saves lives. There's a big difference between
"Let's eat, Grandma"
and
"Let's eat Grandma"
