Hopefully, I can help out with this one. Top Three Reasons:

1. This board shows up in search engines and google alerts. If you have a real life stalker and slip and say something that comes up in search or a google alert, why further confirm their suspicions with info under your username? A single google alert can set off months of harassment or worse. Even after years of stalker silence.

2. If you're an easy mark for a con artist, your state is a conversation starter outside of the board's genre.

3. If you annoy an internet nut, who then cyber stalks you and tries to harass and embarrass you, why hand them info on a platter? It seems like no big deal until they post hacked info and pix or crossover into real life and start calling your boss and your neighbors.

I realize even "normal people" cyber stalk nowadays but it's still immoral and can be quite harmful to both parties. Real life stalkers can, and do, physically harm people. While fellow poster harassment is usually just whackadoodle time, I have seen it interfere in people's real lives via phone calls and false accusations. And, con artists love big communities that think they're a family.

The love of my life is a former cop and I've been on the net since day 2. I've seen a lot of drama and I have a violent felon of a stalker myself. If people want to practice "safety first," that's their prerogative. On the other hand, if someone wants to post their panties along with their full name and address, that's their prerogative, too. Ain't life grand?

Without any doubt, no one put the description of where they are... as *in hiding* it has nothing to do with anything anyone ever typed in their profile.

If you haven't filled in your location, then 'in hiding' is what pops in as the default.

I just thought they did not want us to know what State or Town they lived in. If you don't know their real name, how can it be a problem? I am kind of an airhead sometimes but I honestly don't understand. I do totally understand one wanting their privacy respected. It is their choice.
