I have sewn a little on leather and a little on fake fur. I think all you need is a machine that is pretty heavy duty, some heavy thread and a heavy duty needle. I remember that you can pull the fur out of the seams after you get them sewed together, with an implement like a needle or something long and thin that is not sharp.

I think you will probably want large seam allowances like 1/2" to 5/8", at least. I was thinking squares, but you could probably do strips, too.

I hope this helps, it sounds like it would be really pretty- and welcome to the board from western Washington State!

I have seen a quilt done with duck bellies (the hides). They are VERY soft and warm. I think my Grandfather bought the quilt while in Greenland back during WWII. The pieces were hand pieced together. There was no real pattern, just pieced together. Very neat.

I envision something simple and geometric. Squares and rectangles. I have never sewed on fur, however I have a resource for you. Francie is a teacher at Country Quilts and Bears in Clearwater, FL. She teaches classes on making bears out of every type of real and fake fur. I don't know if she has ever made any type of quilt, but she knows everything about sewing on fur. They have a website and you will be able to contact her through that. Can't wait to see your quilt!
