I love applique, but I hate needle turn1
Try this: Get some used dryer sheets, and trace out the patterns for the pieces on them using a pencil, or fine point permanent marker. place them on the pieces of fabric both face up. and stitch right on the line around the piece, all the way around. Now, cut out the piece, leaving about a 1/4 edge for the seam. Cut slits or notches in the seam on inside curves, for easy turning.
Carefully cut a slot in the middle of the dryer fabric only.
Turn it inside out gently, smooth it down with your fingers, and be sure all the corners and points are poked out properly.
Now sew all the pieces together, into the whole item.
Then sew the whole item onto the background fabric.
After that add embrodiery or other trim onto the fabric to finish your project.
