Greetings from the Emerald Isle to all you lovely ladies. I just came accross this site this morning while trying to keep myself awake having been woken at the crack of dawn by my six year old. The same fella has to be dragged out of bed on school mornings!
I've only been quilting for about 2 years but I'm totally hooked. I've just joined the Irish Patchwork society here but I'm not sure if I'm going to stick it out there, lots of "thou shallt not" kind of quilters whereas I love my quilts MORE for their mistakes. God didn't make me perfect and I'm happy to be that way!
Fabric on this side of the pond is SOOO expensive, 13 euros a metre which is about 17 dollars. I was on holidays in Maine last summer and discovered Walmart and boy did I have fun. I'm only sorry I didn't buy more. At the moment I buy a lot online form the states, usually from fabricshack.com as they're reasonable with the shipping, costs me about a dollar a yard for shipping.
I'm a teacher and I'm making a quilt with my class this year. The kids are 8-9yrs old and they love it. They're hand-piecing the blocks and I'll put them together with sashing and borders etc. If anyone has any ideas, I'd welcome them...
I hope to get to know you all now that I've found this site. Have a good weekend everyone. Here in Ireland it's mid-term break for the kids so we're off to sunny Spain for a week to visit my husbands parents who live there. Catch up with you all when I get back.
Regards, Mel

Hi Mel,
So very nice to see someone from Ireland. The one place I've always wanted to visit. Maybe I'll live long enough.

I can surely understand the fabric being high cost there, but goodness, $17+ is way over the line. Do they not have sheep there? Do they not grow cotton there? It may not be the right climate come to think on it. We have cotton farmers here in North Carolina, USA, but it takes a long time to grow those pods and when they open they have to get the picking machine on it right away. Expensive proposition.

I'm sure you'll love it here. Most everyone is very friendly and helpful. I belong to several quilting boards, but this is my favorite.

Hi Mel, Welcome to this message board. Its great to hear from someone from Ireland. I do alot of celtic type quilts. I live in a town that has a large Irish population. We have a big deal on St. Patricks day, plus a big Irish festival in August. I always set up a booth to sell my celtic and Irish quilt items. I can never get enough Irish fabric. I always have people looking all over the U.S. for this type of fabric for me. Look forward to hearing from you again. Tricia

:D Hello Mellow Yellow,

I am from Texas and am happy to get to chat with you. I had forgotten about this chat board. I know things must be so expensive there. We feel it is terrible here with good quilt shop fabric running 8.50 to 9.50 a yard but I still buy it and just complain. I do have a few sites I order from. I have had good luck with E-bay, also. They have all kind of notions at good prices. It is great you are a teacher. My daughter is a deaf ed/special ed diagnostitian and really stays busy in Georgia. I know your coutry is so lovely. Hope to get over there one day. We just retired last Dec. so have a lot to do yet. Guess I'll hush now and get busy. You can E-mail me if I can be of any help t you. [email protected]

Yours, Peggy

i could've sworn you told us you were coming over to New York in the near future. i thought you must be a different quilter from the one in the other [your] topic. i was just getting ready to introduce you to yourself. LOL

glad i double-checked that.

unless you have multiple personalities ... then maybe i could help all of you get acquainted ... with all of mine, too.

Hi Becky, Sharon, Peggy, Patrice, Tricia,
Just back from our lovely holiday in sunny Spain, back to the usually rain here in Dublin.(Did one of us confuse one of you Patrice??) That's the good thing about living on a small island, we all tend to travel a lot or we'd go stir crazy. That is me who's going to New York at the end of March. And to Lisbon in May. And back to Spain in July. Who says teachers have too much holidays?? How dare you!!!!
So we were in a nice restaurant in the south of Spain having our yummy dinner when the door of the restaurant opened and in walked a woman from my staff at school. This country is soooo small that even when you travel you end up bumping into someone you know! Just as well I didn't have my toyboy lover with me!!!!!
I was greeted when I got home with another fabric package from Fabric shack so I'm all excited...
Will catch up with everyone soon,
Mel

Glad you had a safe and fun trip. That is the good thing about Europe; it is so small that you can go several countries in a few hours. I love to travel and enjoyed our years in the service. My daughter's husband is in the Army but they have not done a lot of travel. She is in Georgia but it is a long way away so it is harder to get to my grandson (4). I still do it, tho. I try to see him every two months or so or bring him home while I can. When he gets into school, I can't do that as easily. Gotta go and get supper. Will talk to you later.

Welcome to the board MEL!!

How great to meet you. I'm glad you had a nice holiday. I'm here in Oklahoma, but right on the Arkansas border. I noticed that no one told you about the fabric at Walmart. When you come back to this side of the pond, you probably won't be able to buy any at Wal Mart. Most stores have gotten rid of their fabrics or gone to prepackaged stuff that has awful quality and high prices.

Good to meet you. And it sounds like you do take too many holidays. HA!!
