i think that was a paper-pieced pattern designed to show off ties that had belonged to men (such as your dad), as a kind of memory quilt. the one i saw was more of a wallhanging. does that sound familiar?

No, the one I saw appeared to be a bed size quilt. Yes, it was a memory quilt of sorts, I guess because it was for the purpose of displaying the ties.

i don't think this is the one, but it is very cute anyway and will display the ties in a nice way. by repeating the blocks or enlarging them, you can make it any size you like.
