I was in WI the first part of August and in a LQS saw candle mats with something like you describe. They were prairie points sewn inside a square of fabric and then the points were lifted up so you could put the candle on the bottom square of fabric. I hope this makes sense and what you want.

Hi and welcome from Scottsdale, AZ. You just missed a mystery quilt weekend with Bearly Stichin in Avondale. Az for the candle mat pattern would something like this work for you?
