Hello - just learning quilting. Have made a couple but am so confused. No matter how I try, I still have trouble understanding cutting terms - like cut straight of grain, lengthwise, crosswise, etc. This is JUST A WHOLE NEW WORLD TO ME. Next BIG problem - cutting backing and then putting it on so that it does not "bunch" up. Am trying to teach myself and I am lost! Any help you can give will be so greatly appreciated.

first, I would recommend you do some reading online or from library....I too am self taught, but have been sewing for a long. time and that helps. as for the bunching up and getting the backing right, for me the best place for anything of size was on the floor. You make a loose sandwich, backing first, face down, as such good side. then batting then quilt. starting in the Middle, like draw an "X" corner to corner. ease out from there to all sides, and put in safety pins, you'll need a bunch, keep going until it is totally covered. this way it shouldn't bunch up. From there you can start tying or in whatever way you are keeping it together. hope that helps. Lois

Welcome from the Los Angeles area. I agree with larkelley. A few good starter books will help you go a long ways. The more basic the book, the better. Sometimes to avoid bunching I use painters tape and tape the back to the floor (I have a tile floor). My Mother nails hers right through the carpet!

Also, many of us use basting spray to assemble the quilt sandwich. Do a search for that and there are several good message threads about that.
Look in the tutorial section, I think someone just posted about beginning quilting which should give you a lot of ideas.
I would be glad to help you with getting started if you would like to send me a private message...just click on my name and when my profile page come up click to send a private message.

Wow, thank you all for such good suggestions. I am so glad I joined. I will keep going until I get it right. I see some of the beautiful quilts that are posted and can't even imagine making any of them.

Thank you all again - I really appreciate it.

I started quilting 4 or 5 years ago... can't remember now. And I still feel like I'm just a beginner. But I'm having soooo much fun. Welcome, from Colorado.
