It sounds like it may have been made from one of the kits that were poppular then. You might try googling Kansas City Star quilot patterns. That was a newspaper that was famous for the quilt patterns they gave away or sold very inexpensively.

Here's an eBay seller (store) that has a ton of vintage Kansas Star patterns very reasonably priced (23 for $6 in most cases).
