but i would love to learn! I have looked at many patterns but none of them explain how to do the actual "quilting" part so where do I find that? I'm lost :)
|
I am still learning how to put all the blocks and backing together, I just started to do the stich in the ditch, which is a form of quilting (the easiest i think), it is the only one I have attempted, you will find this site very helpful, go to your home tab above and there you will find tutorials and links to patterns and links on everything from binding to quilting. very informative, that is how I am learning anyway, step by step...
By the way welcome from Mass... |
Welcome to the board from Southern California!!!
There are lots of wonderful tutorials here on the board and lots and lots of knowledgeable quilters to help you. |
There are two steps ... first you piece the quilt, then you quilt it. Patterns for piecing rarely if ever give directions for quilting.
There are scores of books that teach "quilting" - both basics and books that are more specific about different quilted patterns (feathers, wreaths, etc.) There are also classes that teach various types of quilting. Check with your local quilt shop. Also, lots of people piece quilts then send them to someone else to quilt. Nothing in the world wrong with that approach either. So go ahead and pick a pattern and piece it. In the mean time take a quilt class or get a few quilting books. |
I also have just really be learning to "quilt" by reading on here and you can go to youtube, they have some go ones to watch and I have found that if you pratice on something like "placemats" or "table runners" that are alot easier to handle until you get to know what your doing and when you feel more comfortable quilting.... good luck

Go to your local library and check out their quilting section. Ask at your local quilt shop (or even WalMart) to see if there is a quilt guild anywhere near you. Some guild are good and some are very hard to make friends but, with luck, you will find a good one and they will be happy to help. Start with small easy projects and soon you will be a happy quilter!

Today I bought some fabric at Joanne's and it just screams out to be a one piece wonder. All I'll have to do is plop it down on batting and backing, got that there too, all 40 percent off. (Not the batting) And then I'll stitch in the ditch on all the squares there.
Something like that would fit you nicely, and get you started quilting right soon. I'm cheating because I want to make at least 4 premie quilts for the hospital I used to volunteer with so long. This will be easy to do, probably what will take most time is the binding, haven't decided on that yet. |
am not qualified to give advice, just wanted to welcome you to the board.you will LOVE it here, never metso many helpful& caring people!

Hello and welcome from Minnesota!

Welcome! I am very new too! I have found some great tutorials on youtube. Also, maybe focus on piecing the top and doing simple quilting techniques, like tying or "stich in the ditch" to start with. You dont want to overwhelm yourself and make it too hard. I find I need to be enjoying what I am doing, or else forget it! I want to have fun with my hobbies. :)

Welcome from Wyoming. You will learn alot of great things on here, and everyone is nice and helpful.

Hello, and another welcome from Michigan!

Welcome from NE North Carolina. Wish you lived closer so I could help you! I am just a "covers" quilter but the most fun I ever had quilting was teaching someone who wanted to learn. That said, it isn't hard to get help starting on your own and this board is a fabulous resource. I'd also recommend Bonnie Hunter's website www.quiltville.com. She's unpretentious and has lots of great ideas and free patterns!

Hi & Welcome from Macon Georgia

The quilting part can be what yu make it to be. I started out knotting my layers together. I have stitched in the ditch and then there is hand stitching a design. My favorite is the easiest for me-----I send it out to be quilted. HEHE

Hi and welcome from NY. You don't specify if you want to learn to quilt by hand or machine. I do both. I found this a wonderful book to learn by. http://www.amazon.com/Learning-Quilt...5033453&sr=1-2
It makes a lovely sampler quilt that teaches you loads of different techniques for all kinds of piecing including curves, applique and set in seams (AKA "Y" seams). Then it gives the quilting designs for each and every block with full size drawings you can trace on to your quilt top. My very first bed size quilt I made from this book and hand quilted the whole thing based on the directions supplied. Hand quilting is just a simple running stitch going through all 3 layers of the quilt. It takes a little practice but the more you do the better you get. When I first started to quilt this quilt I tried machine quilting on my DSM (domestic sewing machine) but it was so hard to try and wrestle it through the throat of the machine I just ended up hand quilting. So, as others have said, when you first start MQ you are much better off starting with smaller projects like placemats, table runners or wall hangings. There is also the quilt as you go method (QYAG) where you quilt each block individually then put them all together with sashing. There are loads of web resources on that as well as books. We are always here to help if you get stuck on something. |
Welcome from Beautiful Arizona.
Go to the library and get a stack of quilting books. Look for titles like Easy Quilt Blocks, or One Block Quilts, or any book that has the word easy in the title. Maybe there is a quilting guild in your area. Find out if one of the local churches has a quilting group you can join - quilters love to teach new quilters all they know. Ask friends and have friends ask their friends you have not met yet; maybe one of them is a quilter and would love to share their knowledge with you. And...continue to check out this board. |
yes, youtube videos are great.I learned by going to several sites. If you have that "WANT" you will learn at your own pace.
|
Hi, that's ok if you don't know how to quilt, you will learn. I am learning how to hand quilt, I find it very relaxing (but my furbaby doesn't always let me quilt). I haven't really machine quilted, maybe I'll try some day.
|
You have come to the right place to as about quilting or a lot of other subjects. Just post a question and the people who belong to this board are more than willing to help.
