I am newish to the craft. My mother quilted a lot and I helped some and now that I am near retirement I want to begin quilting myself. I am a year old widow, mother of 3 and grandmother of 3. I have been reading and studying about quilting for several months, have begun my stash, bought a new sewing machine, have some projects in mind and am nearly ready to begin. I still work full time so fatigue is a factor, but still I am anxious to begin :D :-)
I am enjoying this board and learning from you..

I've heard the name and for some reason when I read your subject line that's what I thought of. I travel a lot (driving I-40) between Las Vegas, across Ariz to New Mexico and back, sometimes to Phoenix area too.

Hello from UK, I cannot believe Snowflake is really the name of a place. Especially in Arizona, however did that come about. What a lovely address to have.

Areas across northern & middle Arizona and in the mountains do get snow and ice in the winter. The freeway (I-40) has been closed several times because of snow & ice. One time I was in traffic that was stopped by police about 20 miles east of Flagstaff for over 6 hours during a heavy snowstorm. Lots of snow skiing in the mountains around Flagstaff.

My goodness, that surprises me, I think of Arizona as hot and like a dessert with cacti and such. I am now going to have to google it and have a proper look, thank you for explaining I love learning about your country, it is so varied.

azwendyg 09-12-2010 02:54 PM

Paula's not kidding about the snow up here! We've already had a couple of freezes at our place this fall, and winter is on its way.

The town was named after 2 families in the late 1800's; the Flakes who came to settle here and a man named Erastus Snow who came to dedicate the land for these Latter Day Saint settlers - thus the name Snowflake. We do get a little snow here as we are approx a mile above sea level on a desert plateau.

We are about 30 miles south of I-40 out of Holbrook.
