i received an email this morning from the CEO of borders....they did file chapter 11...and are re-structuring...but they are only closing the under-acheiving stores...out of the 2700 stores in the country, i think it is pretty good they only have to close about 200...and the fact that (ours) is not on the chopping block makes my day too...
the recession has affected most businesses, i have great confidence in Borders coming out even better in a few months.

Blame some things on technology. Back in the 80s and 90s people were being laid off because machines were taking their place. Same thing here, e readers are flourishing and getting cheaper by the year. Hard to halt the process of technology but in the meanwhile people lose jobs.

It's a shame how many kids have never been taken to the local library much less a nice bookstore. All the people I have worked with, been in social groups with, gone to church with, that do not read books seem to be dull and dry thinking. I would rather see any one read on an E reader then not at all. I love my Kindle, it stores thousands of books, I don't have to!

Just heard that Borders and Angus and Robertson are facing the same problem here in Australia. Parent company is different to that in the USA....Lots of independents closing as well...very sad for booklovers.
