I don't cut off that triangle from the beginning of the binding. You need that to be square so you can match it up to the ending of the binding to sew a diagonal seam there. Then you can open that seam and then cut them both off.

Thanks for the wonderful link. I just found out after many years of struggling Faith binding what I was doing wrong. For some reason
sometimes I did it correct and didn't know it and con the same quilt I didn't. I didn't realize that I was not always starting to see my first 45 degree turn a 1/4" in.

I don't trim my quilt edge. I add the binding first, then trim. This way, I can place a pinor mark the quarter inch from the end. Also, when connecting the ends, I measure the open area and lay one end over it, cutting it 1.25 inches over the mark. I lay the other end over the space and cut it 1.25 inches beyond the mark. Then I join the ends sure has saved a lot of frustration.

It is so much easier and so much fun if you press a triangle into the beginning of the binding. Then when you get to the end, overlap the end and cut that end at the base of the triangle. It won't matter how wide your binding strip is, the base of that triangle is the correct width. Cut the end off there. Then put those two ends together like you did all the other seams in the binding. But match edges of fabric - no plus sign here. Then you sew across and you have the perfect binding join. Test it! Now you can open the seam and then trim it.
