Does anyone have a good resource for purchasing crushed walnut shells? I use these for filling pin cushions. I have only been able to find them for sale in small packages. Thanks for any help.

sewgull 05-09-2011 03:55 AM

I would like to know also. I can't find them either.

mommamac 05-09-2011 04:07 AM

FYI - Our quilting group used walnut shells in pincushions & later found out they cause the pins to rust.
The shells retain moisture. :-(

Buy a bag of kitty litter. It is similar and it works the same.

The Babe 05-09-2011 08:15 AM

I found them at a pet store and it was a large and very heavy bag.

babyboomerquilter 05-09-2011 10:15 AM

Wow! Use kitty litter! Great idea!

raedar63 05-09-2011 11:31 AM

Are you looking for "Black Walnut" or "English Walnut" shells?

lots2do 05-10-2011 02:59 AM

Just be careful that you don't give any pincushions made with these to a person with nut allergies.

Krystyna 05-10-2011 03:24 AM

Harbor Freight. I just saw them next to the rock tumblers.

joellesews 05-10-2011 03:26 AM

I've always used human hair.. you dont get the weight but the natural oil in hair keeps the pins sharp, if you want it weighted, make a small base piece filled with kitty litter or long cook rice ( uncooked of course)...

TheresaP. 05-10-2011 03:27 AM

I don't know the difference between the two.

sweetjessy 05-10-2011 04:00 AM

I bought a big bag of walnut shells at my local pet shop, its used to line bird cages.

Sewlmatesister 05-10-2011 04:28 AM

I've been looking for "doll making pellets' for the same thing....any idea where to find them???

Pet store. I bought a HUGE bag of them.

katlady 05-10-2011 05:36 AM

All pet stores sell shells for reptile bedding, you can purchase a bag from them.

CarrieAnne 05-10-2011 06:14 AM

I find it in the petstores.

dixiechunk 05-10-2011 06:33 AM

I bought mine at Pet Smart.

dixiechunk 05-10-2011 06:34 AM

Same thing happened with pin cushions I made.

People use them to put in aquariums that house lizards.

I know Martha Stewart has a place she orders hers from, I don't know it off the cuff but I would guess if you went to her site you could search it.

If you have a pet supply store near you, you can purchase large bags of lizard litter which says right on the bag that it is crushed English walnut shells. I work in a quilt shop and my friends all use this for their pincushions. It is inexpensive that way and is wonderful to work with.

Oh no, I didn't know that, thanks!

BEWARE.....Eventually the rice gets little bugs in it.

thereroy 05-10-2011 09:44 AM

Try the pet shops.

Terri Bogedain 05-10-2011 12:50 PM

I USE BB'S FROM THE SPORTING GOOD STORE HEAVY AND WORKS FOR ME

misoop 05-10-2011 01:09 PM

I received a pin cushion filled with walnut shells, and the pins lost their "gliding" ability. Don't like it! Might want to use something else.

klarina 05-10-2011 01:53 PM

How about steel wool the one you normally use to clean pots and pans?

According with this tut, it helps to sharpen the needles and I suppose does the same with the pins.

Take a look

Try PetSmart. I bought a five pound bag there. Ask for lizard litter--they make it out of crushed walnut shells. Be prepared to pay an arm and a leg. froggyintexas

craftymatt2 05-10-2011 05:35 PM

I use the walnut shells from pet smart, never had a problem that I'm aware of. I only paid around $8.oo for a ten pound bag.

katsewnsew 05-10-2011 05:38 PM

You can find it at the pet stores, called Lizzard Bedding . Comes in a 5-qt bag, sells for about $7.00 per bag.

sdarga 05-10-2011 06:51 PM

Some pet shops carry cruched nut shells. Not sure what the nut mix is and if it would work.

jprusky 05-11-2011 04:00 AM

I got a big bag of crushed walnut shells at PetSmart in Lake Havasu, AZ this winter and shared it with a friend. It sure doesn't take long to use it up if you are making pincushions and you keep giving them away!
