I just started started making the disappearing 9 patch on April 29th and is so much fun. I am making a lap quilt and all made from fat quarters!

I found a tutorial to share with all of you online.

What wonderful and interesting site. I truly enjoyed it and also the tute is great. A really new way to use "scraps" and the "plain" 9 patch to make it so much better. Thanks a bunch. Kutnso

I made one from a Civil War charm pack that turned out very nice. So far I have only the top done. Ihad it assembled once, but ripped it apart as the quilting I did was pretty shaky. So now I am going to try again as soon as school is out. I will post a photo when done.

This forum is a great resource. I've tried all of the links. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you for sharing. I like this Christmas-table-topper & plan to make one. I printed a copy (printer friendly), just in case, coz Christmas is still a long way to go.

I made one of those!! It's in my quilting frame now. At our BOM one of the ladies suggested the idea as an experiment, so I call it my experimental quilt. So far I've gotten some nice compliments.
I would put on a picture if I knew how... I'll check into that. But it isn't finished yet anyway.

Let me see if this works. Like I said, this is in the early stages. I'm not too far from having the quilting finished... and looking forward to the binding stage!

thank you! I am hoping the yard work doesn't slow down the quilting process. I'll post it when it's done.

Melody -

I've done several D9P quilt tops for my quilt guilds for comfort quilts (charity) so don't have any pictures, but I really love your arrangement - looks great with your fabrics. Hope you don't mind if I snag a picture for myself as a reminder of how pretty they can be.

Gilla, I've never seen a Civil War Charm Pack! My husband got me interested in the CW, so I'm also on the lookout for more fabric! Where did you find your Charm Pack?

At a LQS (Quilt Haus 830-620-1382) in New Braunfels, TX. I know they have the fabric (lots)at another LQS here in San Antonio, but I don't know if they have charm packs. I bought my border fabric there. If you like, I check it out for you.

PBS 05-11-2010 07:00 AM

That would be great, Gilla! Do either of these LQS have a website? Thanks :)

Seventh Heaven has two charm packs, Home Front & Crossing. I haven't seen them, so I don't know what they are. This is the one that has lots of CW frabrics. Their website http://www.seventhheavenquiltshop.com. Their fabrics run 8 - 10 per yard.
The other one I am not sure whether they still have CW fabrics. Their website is http://www.quilthaus.com. Their fabrics are in the same price range. Hopew this helps.

PBS 05-11-2010 08:25 AM

Thanks again, Gilla! I'll check them out!

Have fun making your disappearing 9 patch, they are so much fun and when you put it up on the design wall, you will say,

Wow, wow

I designed that!

Happy Quilting!

I first learned about the D9P on this forum, and decided to use it for my twin grand daughter's quilts. I used all of the same variety of fabrics in both quilts, but put my 9 patches together randomly with the fabrics for each quilt. I had mostly light colors in the corners. After cutting up the multi color 9 patches, and putting them back randomly, I appliqued things one might find in their back yard, as I later called it, in the large squares, randomly. I used a squirrel, a bee, a butterfly, a lady bug, a bird, a worm (although some think it might be a snake), a dragonfly, a multi circle creature that has a head and the rest of it's body made out of circles..I don't know what to call it, but you get the idea. I also appliqued 2 overlaping hearts on a square near the center of the quilts, one a darker pink and the other a lighter pink on each quilt signifying that the girls were twins. Of course one had the darker color on top and the other had the lighter pink on top. I had to do the applique after the quilt was sewn together so I would have all of the blocks I was using for the applique right side up. I outlined quilted the bugs and animals and in the large empty squares I hand doodled a flower and hand quilted that. I also used embroidery floss to make eyes, antennas and also faces on some of the bugs and animals and did that after I had my quilt dancwiches so I could hide my knots in the batting. In the rectangles, I drew and quilted a long backward S like shape. My quilting on the borders was a long swooping wavy line with doodle flowers along the way. I hope this might give others ideas of how to do the D9P with a little twist.

Thanks. These are very helpful. I've been hesitant to begin one.

I just made my first D9P quilt top and was so much fun!

Janis 05-29-2010 12:44 PM

I can't post pictures yet. I did send a picture to a friend on the board. I'll ask her if she can scan in pictures of the quilts for me.
I'll copy this link when I ask her, and maybe she can post them here.

craftybear 05-29-2010 12:46 PM

Janis 05-29-2010 07:27 PM

Thanks Bev for showing my quilts!!! The girls are Lauren 3 1/2, and Alexandra and Kaitlyn, 16 months. I put the quilts on the floor after I got done quilting them and let the girls explore them. As they are identical twins, they are identified by the color of the clothing they wear, and so the quilts had to be individual too, but a lot alike too, which I could easily do with the D9P. This is my first time with the D9P quilt. I'm glad you like them and also happy my good friend could and would take the time to show them to you too. Thanks again Bev.
