Why should this concern anyone here? for all we knew they BOTH wanted it gone. Markings on the box may mean nothing

Maybe they did both want it gone, but it wouldn't hurt to check with the woman of the house. And then the buyer can use the things with pleasure instead of wondering if she bought some things that weren't meant to be sold. Doing the RIGHT thing isn't always comfortable, but how much time would it take to check. Sheesh!

Really? you're going to ask a grown man at a yard sale "are you allowed to sell this?".

I think the attitude here that the man of the house is always clueless is insulting and demeaning. I treat my husband with courtesy and respect and he treats me the same. Sorry for the rest of you

Bakermom, I also treat my DH with love and respect. He treats me with love and respect as well. But he has given away a few things that I wanted to keep, had told him I wanted to keep and a) wasn't really listening or b) forgot.

He acknowledges me when I tell him something like that, but it's not important to him so it doesn't get transported from short term memory to long term memory. I don't mean that in a mean way, as he is a wonderful man and will do just about anything for me.

Guess what? I've found myself doing the same thing!

Exactly. It's something most if not all of us have done at some time. But I don't demean my husband, esp. to others.

Only if I was acquainted with the man (or family) would I go back and ask about this purchase.

I heard a story several weeks ago, where the wife was in the hospital having their 4th child and the community was having a yard sale and husband sold the box with the wife's diamond ring in it. Luckily, the person who bought the box returned the ring to the couple. Honesty is still a good policy and it doesn't hurt to ask.
