place them next to a light block, like a same size simple square, and alter them. the light will break it up! no worries

That was my thought and then it adds in some lights to balance the darks. There are lots of quilts using this kind of block.

I agree with tessagin and YukonViv, lay them out and see what you have. If you have blue sewn to red, or brown to green, the HSTs will probably show enough. Even though they all seem to be darks, if it is truly scrappy there will likely be enough variation to make them show.

If you have other squares made of lights and darks, then use them in the center of the quilt and use the dark/dark ones all around as a 'border". Or if you have more of the dark/dark blocks, use them as the center of the quilt and light/dark squares all around for the "border". You have alot of great suggestions here to choose from. Any of them would make a lovely quilt. have fun!

I had a similar situation. I found happy fabric and made squares the same size and appliqued them here & there, centering them over where the four corners meet (so it's centered over 4 corners) using multicolored thread in a satin stitch. It looked like it was planned that way. Happy save!

Look at my avatar picture. That quilt uses HSTs that are dk/dk combination. The whole block is just squares and HSTs. (Someone posted a picture of a totally scrappy quilt of this pattern lately. It is called Buggy Wheels. That person used squares where the dk/dk HSTs are in my quilt. It was striking!) The very center of my version is 4 dk. HSTs and at each corner of the "wheel" are also 4 dk. HSTs. You may have just accidentally started a very beautiful quilt.
