    Default 5000m cone of thread

This is the first time that I have bought such a large spool of thread. Can a person put a cone on the sewing machine or do you have to have a thread stand?

You need a thread stand. You could use a tin, coffee mug, box, something that would hold the cone upright and allow the thread to come off without catching. Generally placed behind the machine.

I would also tape a paper clip to the top near the bobbin winder; letting it hang over and thread through it too.

I use the large cones of thread all of the time without a thread stand. I hope I can explain this properly. Set the large spool/cone on your table directly behind your machine below where your spools of thread normally go. Now, bring the thread up on the right side of the existing sewing machine spool holder, then lay the thread from right to left across where the spools usually sit. Now, thread your machine as normal and this works perfectly. I have used this method for years.

I use a thread stand for larger cones. Someone here put and screw eye in an empty thread spool and had the thread sitting on the table, running it thru the eye screw then thru her machine. I thought that was brilliant idea.
