I started with the basic's. The one it comes with. (5" 2.5" and 2.5" HST) I have a couple of the shape dies and bigger dies. Not to many though.

I find I love the tiny dies the best. 1.5" triangles and squares.

I find I can cut the bigger sizes accurate just fine.

The smaller cuts don't always have that consistency. So, the tiny shape dies are my favorite.

I actually have two cutters. Accquilt and Sizzix Big Shot. I always use the tiny dies on either of them the most. And, both preform more or less the exact same. So, both are good brands. (One was a gift, one I already owned.)

Onebyone has the best idea - buy them as you need them, depending on the quilt you are making. I started with some curved ones too. The Apple Core and the Double Wedding Ring were so totally easy to cut. I like making quilts with 2.5 squares so I go the dies that cuts 9 at once. And the double 5 inch die because I like to make patchwork quilts. I also bought the 1.5 in. and 2.5 in. strip dies.
Now I am super into the machine embroidery and love using the dies that go with the embroider . Luckily they have a wish list section so I just put items I want in there and when they have sales and/or free shipping I pick something out.

I just attended a program at our LQS called there’s a die for that. The presenter said the Hunter Star and 2 1/2 strip cutter are the most popular. He also said if he had it to do over, the first die he would buy is the 6” cube and then the companion sets for it. That shop matches any ACQ online offer. I would rather give the LQS my business whenever I can.
I must warn you.... collecting dies is habit forming.

If you do a lot of Bonnie Hunter Mystery quilts, the two shape "Rabbit Ears" die is most useful. Bonnie has a favorite ruler that you flip and cut, but I am so shaky that I use my GO almost exclusively. I'm practicing on Smith Mountain Morning, for my upcoming class in November. This die has both the star points and the center. I layer the fabrics in so that I get the right color on the correct part. Here's what I've made so far.
Just the center of the star points. The center of the block is just 4 half square triangles sewed.....just so.

I have the Go and I use it mainly to cut strips. I do buy die for special quilts like Hunters Star, etc. I think mine has paid for itself making straight strips 2 1/2”, 1 1/2”.

I have a die cutter and I have several dies now but I use my 2.5" strip die the most, I've probably cut 100 miles of strips with it at least lol

When I purchased the Go Big, I received the 8" Cube set. I add other Dies as I need them. I have the used the strip dies the most. I got the applecore die and made a quilt from it (so very easy to put together). I am getting ready to make a hexie quilt with the smaller die. Just seems best for me to get the dies as I'm ready to use them.
