adding boarders?

Thanks everyone for all your good advice, and more explaining how everything is done. I'll try out the measuring the middle and cutting the boarders.. This must be why I get wavy boarders, thanks so much..

It really depends on how much the difference is between the length of the center of the quilt and the outside border. If it is less than an inch, you can work it in with a large queen size quilt. But over an inch, you need to find out where your excess is with the blocks of the quilt. This is why I stress for quilters to be able to do a consistent 1/4" seam. I use 5 layers of painter tape to make sure my seams are consistent on my sewing base of my Bernina.

I did a search on how to add boarder and most said to measure in the middle of the quilt and cut to size..
could you just cut your boarders the width you want for the quilt and make the length longer then the quilt and sew it on and then cut off what is left over... do you think this would work? Thanks

I do the second way and always cut a bit longer. Never had a wrinkle, pucker or wave. Doing it this way means I can just lay the border on the quilt with out having to stretch or scrunch the border to fit. If you have squared your quilt first there should be no problem. I do my binding the same way and only pin 8" to 12" ahead of the needle.

If my border is mostly one piece- and what I'm sewing it to has a lot of small pieces - I put the border on top - that way it easier for me to ease in the "extra" if necessary.
It is easier to control the seam directions if the part with more seams is on top.
If one has a walking foot - it probably does not make a lot of difference, but for me, the part with fewer seams goes on top.
