Advice on fabric

In a quilt shop where they were selling raw silk to make quilts with, the shop owner told me they use iron on fabric stabilizer to manage the fraying and to reduce/alleviate the distortion of the fabric. It was a really light weight stabilizer. I thought it was a brilliant idea, but have yet to try it. I made a quilt recently with yarn dyed cottons that were a fraying and stretching nightmare and wished I'd know about the stabilizer then.

actual satin is (slippery) takes care to use- you could use a cotton sateen-which has a nice sheen-resembles satin in appearance & feel- but is much easier to work with.
if you do go with satin---also adding a good lightweight fusable woven (or tricot) interfacing to help stablize the fabric & keep the fraying down
