I go by one rule when it comes to deciding how to quilt a quilt. If it has straight line piecing I quilt curves. If it has curved pieces I quilt straight lines. Which straight line pattern or which curved pattern is the only decision to make.

    Hi Judy,

I JUST finished quilting my same pattern table runner a few days ago! How funny. Here's what I did. I'm having trouble staying in the ditch, and I don't know how to free motion quilt yet, so I did a very forgiving Serpentine stitch over the ditch and then traced a motif with gentle curves for the center in which I used my walking foot to quilt that. Here are a few pics. I still need to put my binding on it, tho.

Sounds like you've received some nice ideas here.

    Happy quilting,

Quiltgranny points out something quite creative.
If staying in the ditch is a problem, or if you can't get the stitches close enough to catch the binding on the back of your quilt? Using a slight zig zag or other decorative stitch will usually get the job done and look like you have really done something special.
nice table runner and quilting, by the way, Quiltgranny <wave>

    Thanks Omak,

You're absolutely right on! Another great way to turn "I can't" into "I can"! Sometimes, I think my stitching has MS like I do; it tends to wobble when trying to go in a straight line!

That isn't wobbling .. it is creative license! <g>
How often do we here that a quilt has "movement" ... serpentine, small zigzag, decorative stitch, or creative license ... there seems to be a lot of ways to get "movement" into a quilt! LOL <wave>

So, next time I get stopped for wobbling on the roads, I'll explain to the nice officer that it was just "creative license" - as in "I meant to do that". Nah, just kidding! But really, I do think this opens up a road to more creative freedom. It's like that ol tape playing in our heads telling us we must color within the lines... ya know that one? Well, I'm beginning to challenge that notion a bit! Movement is good, real good!
