I knot my thread. I also use a light weight fabric on the back to keep my threads from showing thru. The front of my embroidery looks good (if I say so myself) and I figure no one will see the back once its a quilt anyway. I do try to keep my backs somewhat neat (kinda).

Im to lazy to do hand embroidery so bought a cheap Brother embroidery machine. I love it.
It only has a 4 in space but it was only $300 and works fine for quilt blocks.
Just made a bunch of leaf designs for a table topper.
