I have a 1/4" foot, marked throat plate and sometimes a tape guide AND I press and starch - it helps but I just can't do long seams at 1/4"! Going to have cataract surgery - maybe that will finally do it?!

I do think it might be your machine partially. But I can't say my seam is all that perfect either. Hey but I am having fun! I think the older vintage machines give a wonderful straight stitch and line.

Same here. I thought I'd have no problems with quilting since I'd done a lot of garment sewing. NOT! Sometimes I look at my seams and wonder if I was asleep when I sewed them. But I think I'm getting better. And I think I finally mastered the 1/4 inch seam. At least it seems to be working out on a recent project.

Maybe we should start the Crooked Line Club? I can't sew a straight line for the life of me... It doesn't matter which machine I use, or how fast or slow I sew...

Ditto! Even when I slow the speed on my machine...still no straight line.

Well, I was going to add that it might be the machine and not you, then I read you have a Viking. I started out years ago with a $85 machine from Kmart? Or Walmart. Bought a new machine to finish DS's baby quilt and it made all the difference in the world. Now... that doesn't mean I can sew a straight line though!

I am better at it now, but still find myself drawing the 1/4 line mark right on the fabric with pencil or a fabric marker AND I have the 1/4 seam foot. It all helps, but sometimes.... the 1/4 in seam just ain't happening.

When I was 13 my grandma told me I'd never learn to drive because I couldn't sew a straight seam. I'm driving but my seams still may not be perfectly straight.

slow down and look at how you sit in front of the machine.
If you are not sitting straight on your seams might not be straight on either.
