You pay for both sides of the fabric, of course you can use either side you want. I have used the back side of fabrics on several occasions, when I want a "not so quite bright" piece.

"I will not be afraid of the quilt police"

I am guilty of the same thing! We questions our own likes and dislikes because of some "rule" we are afraid to break!

I had BOM kits where you were instructed to use the reverse side of a piece of fabric.

That's funny because I just finished a quilt I quilted from the back! I didn't want to admit it, but it worked great!
