I was thinking about a Trip around the World too. I did one that might help you visualize colors going from light to dark... I wouldn't say it was easy, but I had only been quilting about a year or so when I made it, so it is do-able. My colors repeat, but you could just have it keep getting darker and darker...

Fabrics I came up with: Moda - Shades of Black at River City Quilters. At Missouri Star Quilt - Muslin Mates and Ivory Basics. My favorite - Liquorice - Hoffman Bali Pops I found on ebay. I love shopping for other people, it's free! Sounds like you have a nice project coming along. Good luck and enjoy!

Are you familiar with paper piecing? If not, these could be made regular piecing also, pineapple and square in a square tutorials are easy to find, just use your block size and colors.

I've done some paper piecing, but I did buy a special "pineapple ruler" at a quilt show a while back.

That's why I love this board..... so many ideas.

I'm just sad that I'm not experienced enough to add much to other people's questions. But I do learn a lot reading the answers.

Thanks everyone! I appreciate all the ideas.... now I just have to figure out what I'm going to do.

My Avatar pattern is called Colorsplash by Piecemakers. It is a trip around the world but would work great with the graduation in the colors from white to black. I have also done a bargello in shades of gray.

I would suggest a water color quilt, or also called a color wash. You use small squares of various fabrics to make a wash of color. I bought some fabric at Quilt market Houston that vary from dark to light in batiks. You canalso hand dye fabric to do this as well.
