I usually ask before I make, unless I'm making something scrappy like an I Spy. Once I asked, and the mom said "green and black'. That really surprised me! I did what she asked...green and black 9 patches with the cutest black fabric with bright geckos all over it. It was a cute quilt. Too bad she never said thanks...

When I make crib quilts I make them using greens, purples, oranges, etc.
This way the quilt can be given to either girl/boy baby.
Seldom do I ever make a blue/pink quilt.

If I know the sex of the baby, I like to pick out a print becoming to that girl or boy and add some solid colors to go with it.

I prefer the really brights that can go for boy or girl, unless I know the theme they'll be using.

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. Generally, I like bright colors, and try to make a baby quilt that a child will be happy with for at least 5 years. I also try to make the backing a more grown up fabric so the child won't feel like a baby using it after he or she is 3 or 4 years old.

I like to think the majority of my baby quilts are "generic", nursery prints, bright, colorful fabrics, although I have had requests for baby quilts made with Mickey Mouse fabric, trucks, planes, space fabric - for 2 sets of NASA scientists, and I try to buy fabric that would be good for either a boy or a girl.

I love lavender and green, very gender neutral. I also love bright colors, I heard something about bright colors being good for a baby, not sure why but they are cheery and can be gender neutral. Of course this all depends on the mother's preference. If the gender is unknown go with colors the parents are doing the nursery in.

I often choose a design and colors for baby quilts based on the season. Designed a pumpkin on graph paper with squares in a variety of oranges for October birth. Did a large four leaf clover for March birth. Garden theme for summer birth(gardener granny). I just have fun with baby quilts!

I love bright colors for babies! If the mom has a nursury theme, I try to match it. The only one I've done this year was for a niece who does not have a nursury theme. They had also chosen not to find out the gender before the birth. She only said that they like animals a lot, expecially monkeys. I had the perfect piece in my stash of Moda "Silly Safari" from 2-3 years ago. Jungle animals and rainbows, very bright colors and I had a FQ pack of rainbow colors. The back is flannel, and also had rainbows and jungle animals. This is the quilt and the Mom-to-be at the shower a couple of weeks ago:
