I like brights, bold, black & white, and parent preference!

I use all colors and not just pastels. If I use pink it would be for a girl, if I use blue it is for anyone.

Rainbows in both pastels and bolds. Kids love bright colors and rainbows.

I will use any color in a shade that appeals to me- where I draw the line though, is I do not like soft little baby prints. My first baby quilt had a zig zaggy blue, green, black and white backing - and the mother says that her little one just stares at that. For a close family member, would make what they want - but anybody else gets whatever strikes my fancy.

More than 30 years ago I had read that reasearch showed that babies (newborns) prefer strong contrasts such as black and white and bright strong colors. It was done by tracking what babies eyes fixed on and how long they would look at various pictures of all kinds, between two different pictures, etc. Ever since then I would choose these unless the parents would have a request for particular colors I would go with these.

I just finished a baby blanket for my niece who is expecting a girl. The colors are blue, green, red, pink, and purple. She wanted bright and cheerful colors. The backing is pink since she's having a girl.

I go with what the parents tastes are. I can't really stand many shades of pink but am finishing up one that is primarally pink. almost all my girl quilts have purple in them because its my favorite color. I do like blues and greens for boys though. I try to make quilts that mom will like and be more apt to use. because if mom doesn't like it it won't be used. I find 40" is a really good size to make for the baby to use. if it for the crib then I make it larger to fit a toddler bed.
